Teaching recognition to computers
If you look at the NS railway map, you will recognize the contours of Netherlands inmediatly. While you really just see a pair of horizontal, vertical and diagonal lines. It is a schematic representation of the Netherlands, which can be identified at a glance as such. Mathematician Wouter Meulemans teaches computers to make recognizable schematic maps based on existing detailed maps.
